I think many people don't want to be hated.
Even if a person is a little different from others, they do not want to be disliked.
But it’s natural for a person to be either liked or not liked.
There is always going to be that difference at work or even within a family. It’s a sad thing.
If a parent loves their child, other people will want to love them, too.
It is truer if the child is from a high-ranking family.
But also true for people from lower ranks.
If the child is good-looking, the parents can’t help loving them.
And if there is nothing special about the child, the parents will think, “No one will love our child. So we will love this child as much as possible.”
It is the most wonderful thing to be loved.
Love can come from parents, someone you work for, or someone you are close with.
It does not matter where the love comes from.

Men think in the most mysterious ways.
They break up with beautiful women and marry ugly ones.
It is a mystery to me.
Men who come and go in the palace can choose from many beautiful women and be loved by them.
It doesn’t matter if the women are from high-ranking families.
If a man thinks she is the best, that is the woman to love forever.
Generally, it seems that men want to marry women who are said to be beautiful, even if they haven’t met before.
However, why do men love women who are unattractive from our point of view?
I have seen many women with beautiful faces and kind hearts write letters to men.
They have great handwriting and write great poems.
Sometimes the women complain in letters, but the men only write back empty promises.
It is very upsetting to see the men forget about these women and go after new ones.
Everyone knows this is wrong.
But men don’t realize when they do it themselves.
They don’t understand the pain they cause women.

I really don’t understand why people get angry when they hear someone talking badly about others.
You can’t stop it.
Unless it’s about you, how can you stop saying bad things about others?
I know it’s a bad thing to do.
Most often, the people you talk about hear about it and start to hate you.
So, I guess it’s not worth talking about others.
If the story is about someone you care about, then you think to yourself, “I feel sorry for them.”
You try to keep it to yourself.
If not, you will talk about them and laugh about it.

The pillow Book(Meredith Mckinney

Things that make your heart speed up:
A horse race.
When you make paper strings to tie your hair.
When your parents say that they are not feeling well and look different.
Your heart beats even faster when you also hear that there is a sickness going around.
Then, you can’t get anything done.
Or when a small baby cries and cries and doesn’t drink milk, even when the nurse is holding it in her arms.
When you hear the voice of your secret lover that no one knows about, especially if you hear it when you didn’t expect to.
And if people start talking about him, your heart beats wildly.
Or when someone you really don’t like comes over, your heart beats quickly.
That is what a heart does.
And when a note from last night’s lover comes late in the morning, even if it’s not for you, your heart races.

143

Things that are cute:
A child’s face drawn on an Oriental melon.
A baby bird making small jumps toward you as it hears you make a bird sound.
Or when a small child is crawling quickly and then suddenly sees something and stops. It’s a piece of garbage, but the child picks it up with its small, fat fingers and shows it to an adult. These gestures are cute.
Or when a child with hair down to their eyes, moves their head toward one sholder without pussing the hair out of the way ,they look out through their hair and it is cute.
And the sight of boy from a good family walking around in beautiful clothing .
Or seeing a beautiful baby falling asleep in someone' s arms. That is also cute.
The little tables and chairs made for dolls.
A leaf of a lotus flower you picked up from a pond ,or a very small leaf of a different plant.
Everything small is cute.
A fat two-year old child with a white face coming out from a room wearing a long kimono, and then you see that the sleeves are held together in the back with the ribbon, or even the sight of them walking around with short kimonos with sleeves that look too long, they are all cute.
A boy about 8, 9 or 10 reading a book out loud in their childish high voice.
Or when a chick cries out loudly were walking near people ,their long legs and their white feathers make me think of a women with her kimono separatedly at the legs.
They even look cute when they all run toghether with their mother hen .
The eggs of a duck . A glass pot.

144

Things that make the heart lurch with anxiety
Things that make your heart speed upも、心臓の鼓動の早まりという表現によって心配、期待を超えて使える良い訳だと感心する。

A sparrow coming fluttering down to the nest when her babies are cheeping for her."

Meredith Mckinney

A baby bird making small jumps toward you as it hears you make a bird sound."
Meredith Mckinney

ホームメード・グラノラの幸せ_a0000692_10034132.jpg

ホームメード・グラノラの幸せ_a0000692_10034696.jpg

The Pillow Book (枕草子)

The Pillow Book (枕草子)_a0000692_22042360.jpg

Things that make your heart beat fast -
A sparrow with nestlings.
Going past a place where tiny children are playing.
Lighting some fine incense and then lying down alone to sleep.
Looking into a Chinese mirror that’s a little clouded.
A fine gentleman pulls up in his carriage and sends in some request.
To wash your hair, apply your makeup and put on clothes that are well-scented with incense.
Even if you’re somewhere where no one special will see you, you still feel a heady sense of pleasure inside.
On a night when you’re waiting for someone to come,
there’s a sudden gust of rain and something rattles in the wind, making your heart suddenly beat faster.

Things that make people worry:
a mother worries about her son who has been a monk on the holy mountain of Hieizan for twelve years,
when you go somewhere you don’t know and night falls. Servants aren’t allowed to use any lights because they shouldn’t be seen.So they sit in lines and worry in the darkness.
Or when your new servant is late coming back. You asked the servant to take something important to someone, but you worry if that servant can be trusted or not.
Also a baby that won’t let anyone hold it. Its arms fly around while it cries. You worry.

67

Things that are opposite:
Summers and winters. Night and day. Rainy days and sunny days. Happy people and angry people. Old people and young people. Things that are white and things that are black.
People who love you and people who hate you. Even when they are the same person, it changes how they treat you. When they have different feelings about you, you might think, “They can’t be the same person.”
Fire and water. Fat people and thin people. People with long hair and people with short hair.

68

Things that are rare:
When a woman’s father says nice things about her husband. When a man’s mother says nice things about his wife.
A pair of silver tweezers that can really take out hairs.
A servant that does not say bad things about his master.
A person without any bad characteristics.
It’s a person who has a beautiful face, a good heart, and acts the way they should.
It’s a person who is also good at being friends with everyone, and no one says bad things about them.
There are some people you spend time with who are very polite and thoughtful of others.
It’s rare for such a person not to show her faults at all.
To copy a story or poem without dropping a single drop of ink on the original book.
You try really carefully not to do that when the original book is important.
But most of the time, you do.
To have a good relationship forever with someone you care for. That is rare for anyone.

71

(67)Disturbing things、(68)Things that can't be compared(71)Rare thingsと訳されている。

Things that make people worry / Things that are opposite / Things that are rare
